By the back nine, Cold Cuts had stopped pretending to be having fun. Pinehurst No. 2 deserves better than that reaction, honestly, and so does he. Donald Ross built a course that challenges the best players in the world. If you’re not a scratch golfer, there’s a much better way to spend your weekend here. A 14 handicap taking on No. 2 is a Honda Accord entering the Daytona 500. No offense to the Accord, it’s a great car, I’ve driven one for 15 years. It just doesn’t have the horsepower to run with a Camaro ZL1.
Joey Cold Cuts took nine shots on a 411-yard par 4. Effective strategy if the goal is getting your money’s worth.
Hole 3 wasn’t much better for the group. They combined to hit out of seven different bunkers on one hole. Bob scored a triple. Pinehurst No. 2 was just getting started.
To their credit, through all of it, they still had good things to say. Walking the front nine, someone calls it a “full circle moment,” a “beautiful day,” happy just to be there. They still walked up 18 calling it a special moment. That’s either good sportsmanship or Stockholm syndrome. Probably both.

Hole 2: Joey’s 9. The fix: a Southern Pines bar crawl.
Start at Red’s Corner. Food trucks, a beer garden, and live music most nights of the week. Nobody’s keeping score.
Hole 3: Two triples, one hole. The fix: The Cradle, barefoot.
Shoes off, wedge and a putter, music playing. All of Pinehurst’s beauty, none of the pain that comes with playing it seriously.
Hole 6: Bob’s second triple. The fix: The Deuce.
Grab a table on the veranda and watch other people try to figure out No. 2’s 18th green. It’s a better view when you’re not the one hitting the shot.
Hole 11: Joey’s third blow-up. The fix: lapping Bottlebrush.
Six holes, all under 100 yards, eight dollars a round. Pinehurst’s best-kept secret, and the only difficult decision is deciding whether to play it twice or three times.
Hole 12: Bob’s third triple. The fix: Pinehurst No. 3.
It looks like a joke on the scorecard, barely 5,300 yards. It isn’t one. The greens are the size of your kitchen island and run at the same speed as No. 2 and No. 4. Short doesn’t mean easy here.
Hole 13: Joey’s quadruple. The fix: Thistle Dhu.
Eighteen holes of putting, free to all, right next to the Cradle. If you can’t putt on No. 2, this is where you find out why, at no cost and no shame.

None of this is a knock on Bob Does Sports. Pinehurst No. 2 has done this to better golfers than everyone’s favorite group of YouTube golfers. The same difficulty that makes it a U.S. Open venue is what makes it a rough way to spend a Saturday with your buddies. Sometimes you have to choose between a great golf course and a great time. Just ask Joey.
