A sixth-generation Carthage farm scooping homemade ice cream alongside strawberries and peaches, in season.
Highlanders Farm has been in the same family for six generations, out on NC-22 in Carthage. It’s a working farm first, strawberries kick off the season each spring, u-pick if you want to work for it, pre-picked if you don’t, and it carries through peach season with the same setup. The country store sells produce, jams, and pickled goods alongside everything else, and there’s a drive-thru if you’d rather not get out of the car.
The ice cream is homemade on-site, made with whatever’s in season, that’s the whole point of a farm doing its own rather than buying it in. It’s out in Carthage, a few minutes past Pinehurst proper, a good excuse to see a little more of the county than just the Village and Broad Street.
